Alabama opens up big lead in NCAA women’s golf

Alabama opened up a huge, 11-stroke lead after the second round of the women’s NCAA golf championships on Wednesday at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn.

The Tide’s players shot a combined 3-under-par 285 on Wednesday to go along with their 286 on Tuesday to give them a two-round total of 5-under-par 571. No other team is close to being under par in this scoring system in which the four best scores of the team’s five players count toward the team total.

Alabama, which is ranked No. 2 in the country, has never won a national title in this event.

No. 1-ranked UCLA is tied for second with North Carolina and Virginia at 6-over with two rounds to play Thursday and Friday.

The best round of the day was posted by South Carolina, which was 7-under-par and is tied for third with Arizona State at 7-over for the tournament.

Alabama also has the leader among the individual golfers. The Tide’s Brooke Pancake shot a 2-under-par 70 on Wednesday to put her at 6-under for the two rounds. That’s two strokes ahead of Giulia Molinaro of Arizona State and three strokes better than Katie Burnett of South Carolina, Portland Rosen of Virginia and Brittany Marchand of North Carolina, who are tied for third at 3-under. Burnett had the best round of the day with a 5-under 67.
